    An extension of the block spacial path approach to analysis of the influence of intra and interregional trade on multiplier effects in general interregional input-output models

    In a number of recent papers Sonis, Hewings and coworkers have extended spacial path analysis to a block structural context capable of analysing the relationship between direct blocks of influence, such as intra and interregional trade coefficients or demographic-economic interactions, and full model multipliers. The approach makes use of a definition of the direct coefficients block partitioned matrix in terms of simpler matrices each of which is made up of null blocks except for one block column. In the current paper, the underlying technique is extended by making use of an even simpler matrix construction - an "almost null" matrix, defined as null in all partitioned blocks except one. An arbitrary n x n block partitioned direct coefficients matrix can be represented as a sum of n-squared almost null matrices. Properties of almost null matrices are exploited to enable analytically manageable expressions for the Leontief inverse to be written entirely in terms of the almost null matrices making up the direct coefficients matrix. Additive and multiplicative representations in terms of groupings of almost null matrices are provided.

    Abstract: A driving force behind the emergence of the ‘new’ or information economy is the growth of the internet network capacity. A fundamental problem in mapping this dynamic is the lack of an acceptable theoretical framework through which to direct empirical investigations. Most of the models in the literature on network externalities have been developed in a static framework, with the externalities viewed as instantaneous or self-fulfilling. The model specified here builds on the received theory from several sources to extend these features and develops a dynamic model that is both capable of econometric estimation and which provides as an output a direct measure of the network effect. Accordingly, the main goal of this paper is to find the magnitude of the external effect on internet network growth. In addition, this paper illustrates the ability of the panel data to generate estimates of structural parameters capable of explaining internet host growth.Information; network externalities; internet; growth

    Risk and Growth: Theoretical Relationships and Preliminary Estimates for South Africa

    In the recent literature on economic growth there is disagreement over the relationship between growth and volatility and their relative benefits and costs in welfare terms. An analytical resolution of this issue, which has serious implications for domestic and international development policies, has been seen to be contingent upon how relative risk aversion and intertemporal substitutability are related in frameworks characterizing utility maximization of representative agents. It is commonly assumed that these aspects of preferences are rigidly linked, casting doubt on the expected utility maximizing paradigm as an appropriate modeling methodology for analyzing this important issue. In this paper it is first shown that these concerns are only relevant for special functional forms that enforce a unitary consumption elasticity of wealth. Next, a theoretical approach is employed to specify a more general relationship between risk aversion and intertemporal substitutability. The theoretical model is developed in the context of a two country representative agent model where risk affects domestic and direct foreign investment in both countries. The two country orientation is also capable of interpretation of the relationship between one country and the rest of the world. In a preliminary empirical application of the methodology to South African data, we attempt estimation of the parameters of generalized functions for preferences and technology which are capable of distinguishing between risk aversion and intertemporal substitutability.

    Dynamics of Labor Demand: Evidence from Plant-level Observations and Aggregate Implications

    This paper studies the dynamics of labor demand at the plant and aggregate levels. The correlation of hours and employment growth is negative at the plant level and positive in aggregate time series. Further, hours and employment growth are about equally volatile at the plant level while hours growth is much less volatile than employment growth in the aggregate data. Given these differences, we specify and estimate the parameters of a plant-level dynamic optimization problem using simulated method of moments to match plant-level observations. Our findings indicate that non-convex adjustment costs are critical for explaining plant-level moments on hours and employment. Aggregation generates time series implications which are broadly consistent with observation. Further, we find that a model with quadratic adjustment costs alone can also broadly match the aggregate facts.

    An Appropriate Model for the Estimation of Consumer Time Expenditure Patterns on the Internet

    IPTS recently acquired a consumer internet clickstream database containing the full set of annual (2011) clickstream records for about 25.000 internet users in the five largest EU economies (UK, Germany, France, Italy and Spain). It contains time spend on each webpage and socio-economic characteristics of the internet users. This study describes a model of consumer Internet time use that is capable of empirical implementation with the clickstream database. There is a natural model of Internet search time that could be developed to fit neatly with the database as it currently exists. The basic structure of such a model has been discussed in detail. The study recommends that IPTS should not rely on any existing model of Internet time expenditures. There does not appear to be a good contender in the literature that would adequately address the requirements of IPTS nor the realities of available data.     Synthesis and Stoichiometry of MgB2

    The system MgxB2 has been investigated to investigate possible nonstoichiometry in MgB2. When synthesized at 850oC, MgB2 is a line compound with a possible Mg vacancy content of about 1%. Small changes in lattice constants as a function of starting composition result from grain interaction stresses, whose character is different in the Mg-rich, near-stoichiometric, and Mg-deficient regimes. A small linear decrease of the superconducting transition temperature, Tc, in the Mg-rich regime results from accidental impurity doping.Comment: Accepted for publication in Physica C. 24 pages, 7 figure

    Affective Man-Machine Interface: Unveiling human emotions through biosignals

    As is known for centuries, humans exhibit an electrical profile. This profile is altered through various psychological and physiological processes, which can be measured through biosignals; e.g., electromyography (EMG) and electrodermal activity (EDA). These biosignals can reveal our emotions and, as such, can serve as an advanced man-machine interface (MMI) for empathic consumer products. However, such a MMI requires the correct classification of biosignals to emotion classes. This chapter starts with an introduction on biosignals for emotion detection. Next, a state-of-the-art review is presented on automatic emotion classification. Moreover, guidelines are presented for affective MMI. Subsequently, a research is presented that explores the use of EDA and three facial EMG signals to determine neutral, positive, negative, and mixed emotions, using recordings of 21 people. A range of techniques is tested, which resulted in a generic framework for automated emotion classification with up to 61.31% correct classification of the four emotion classes, without the need of personal profiles.
